For a safer life in our communities: disaster risk reduction in Southeast Europe

This publication provides a practical introduction into the organization of community based disaster risk reduction activities in Southeast Europe. It is based on various disaster risk reduction (DRR) programs implemented by Caritas organizations in local communities in Albania, Bulgaria, Kosovo, Romania and Serbia in the period 2007-2013. It is intended to be a support for organizations, relief workers and community facilitators who plan to develop and implement DRR-programs, especially in the context of Southeast Europe.

The book comprises short sections of theory introducing the main subjects of disaster risk reduction, descriptions of practical methods which can be used in the work with local communities and various practical examples from several countries. The main chapters of the publication are: (i) introduction in disaster risk reduction; (ii) first steps in community work; (iii) risk assessment; (iv) analyzing the reasons – finding solutions; (v) prevention – mitigation – preparedness.
