Guidebook on assessing the risks to natural hazards: case study - Province of Central Java

This document reports on a project intended to elaborate and test practical georisk analysis processes in Indonesia, primarily based on existing hazard and vulnerability data. It focuses on assessing 'natural' hazards - geological hazards - as well as the
community’s vulnerability and capacity to withstand a disaster at the provincial level. The document is arranged in sections, starting with short introductions. Each section comprises of a collection of maps representing the individual data sets and steps for the risk assessment process. It includes a brief description about the general aspects the map is showing as well as recommendations regarding mandates, roles and standards that shall help to improve and enhance the efficiency of disaster risk assessments and analysis.

The main purpose of this document is to help local authorities (provinces and regencies) to build their capacities in mapping and assessing risks to geohazards. It is intended to be used for discussion among the community of civil servants, academics and professionals who are committed to develop a national practical guideline on how to tackle the complex task of assessing the risk to natural disaster in Indonesia.
