Disaster risk reduction: case studies from Asia


This compendium of research papers is based disaster risk reduction and understanding the nature, occurrence, and severity of threats, underlying causes of vulnerabilities and capacity of the populace in South and Southeast Asia. It addresses the new focus of disaster risk reduction at present is on vulnerability reduction and building resilient communities. Key thematic areas include: (i) natural hazards, vulnerabilities and disaster risk in South Asia; (ii) a framework for integrating community-based disaster risk management into government policy and programming in Southeast Asia; (iii) rapid disaster risk assessments of coastal communities in Indonesia; (iv) drought risk assessment in Timor Leste; (v) economics of land degradation; and (vi) development of early warning and emergency communications systems.
