This brief presents UNDP's key message for Rio+20 on social development, and more specifically on social protection systems. It presents the UN Social Protection Floor initiative, which calls for the integration of social insurance and social assistance activities with adaptive social protection measures to build resilience in poor and vulnerable households to weather-related and other shocks, among other areas. It asserts that transitions to sustainable development require more effective social protection. It also introduces some new approaches from the 'south,' such as integrated approaches to aligning socio-economic development with environmental sustainability and disaster risk management, which bend social protection with programming for food security, employment generation, disaster risk reduction, environmental protection, and the extension of basic services.
