The effects of climate change: storm damage in Europe on the rise

This study is the result of an analyses of the effect of climate change on winter storms in Europe, and the implications for the insurance industry. Scientists linked Swiss Re's loss model with climate models to quantify the impact of climate change on European winter storm damage. The study stresses that climate change will lead to more frequent and intense winter storms in Europe, causing increased damage in the long-term. It recommends that climate protection efforts need to be accelerated including the promotion of adequate settlement planning, establishment of appropriate construction standards and the development of early warning systems.
