Climate change adaptation in Peru: the local experiences

This publication presents a summary of Practical Action's experience in Peru in the development of alternative climate change adaptation technologies using appropriate practices. It synthesises learning and outcomes of experiences looking at fostering adaptive capacity and building resilience, as well as reducing vulnerability to a wide range of hazards.

It also presents four initiatives addressing the: (i) relationship between Andean cultures and climate variability, and its related natural hazards as the result of changing weather conditions –droughts, heavy rainfall, frosts and hailstorms and hailstones– and risks associated with the hazards and vulnerabilities; (ii) adaptation of native potatoes in two highland areas of Cusco and Yungay; (iii) watershed management as a climate change adaptation measure in Yungay, the central highlands; and (iv) adaptation experiences from coffee and cocoa plantations in the San Martín rainforest.
