This publication provides a view of New Zealand’s major hazard events of 2009, and the work of the National Institute of Water & Atmospheric Research (NIWA), GNS Science and other organizations in their efforts to reduce the risks and mitigate the effects of natural hazards, in New Zealand. It includes a description of the Natural Hazards Research Platform, a long-term research structure which aims to encourage collaboration between scientists and end users together and sections on the value of sustained observations in hazard forecasting, and on insurance and 'natural' disaster claims.
