This document addresses the imediate public health risks faced by United Nations agencies, nongovernmental organizations, donor agencies and local authorities currently working with populations affected by the emergency in Haiti: (i) wounds and injuries; (ii) water/sanitation/hygiene-related and foodborne diseases; (iii) diseases associated with crowding; (iv) vaccine-preventable diseases and routine immunization coverage; (v) vector-borne diseases and zoonotic diseases; and (vi) other public health risks and considerations, as environmental risks.
It then gives recommendations about specific priority interventions for immediate implementation concerning: water and sanitation, shelter and site planning, immunization, surveillance/early warning and response system, prevention and management of malnutrition, and communication issues. It also provides some valuable information sources that aim to facilitate the coordination of activities between all agencies working among the populations currently affected by the crisis.
