Urban environmental degradation and vulnerability to disasters, summary of presentation


A/CONF.172/11/Add.2:

This paper addresses environmental degradation in developing country cities and vulnerability of urban dwellers to both natural and technological disasters. It asserts that sustainable development of urban areas requires a balanced approach, based on economic, social and environmental criteria.

This paper is a summary of presentation by Mr. Mohan Munasinghe, Division Chief, Environmental Policy of the World Bank, made at the technical session "Natural disaster reduction: effects of disasters on modern societies" at the World Conference on Natural Disaster Reduction, Yokohama, Japan, 23-27 May 1994.
