UN General Assembly 67th session: Statement delivered at the General Debate - Guyana

A statement delivered to the 67th General Assembly annual General Debate by the President of Guyana, saying that, as a low lying coastal state, his country was mindful of the dangers posed by climate change and has been at the forefront of appeals for the international community to match its concern with tangible action. He praised the countries that were taking this issue seriously, such as Norway, which led the way by giving tangible support in fighting climate change. He added that Guyana chose to pursue a Low Carbon Development Strategy in order to assure economic growth, social progress and environmental sustainability for present and future generations of our citizens. He also called for acting now, stating that those suffering from chronic hunger cannot wait until the international community agrees on a post-2015 development framework, while food prices surge once again and risk rise even further as severe droughts decimate crop yields.
