A statement delivered to the 67th General Assembly annual General Debate by the President of the Maldives, stating that climate change was the most important, complex development facing small States. Citing the threats of sea-level rise, ocean acidification, changes in average temperature, and the “variability of precipitation events,” as well as coastal erosion, he said that the Government now spent more than 27 per cent of its national budget on building resilience to climate change. He reiterating his call for a binding agreement on reducing global carbon emissions and urged the 2015 development agenda to be one that recognises the particular characteristics and needs of small states.
