Commission on the Status of Women: Gender equality and the empowerment of women in natural disasters

A resolution proposed by Japan, one year after the Great East Japan Earthquake, with a view to sharing Japan's experiences and lessons learned from the disaster with other states to deepen the international community's understanding on various issues concerning natural disaster and gender, as well as to promote more gender-sensitive disaster risk management.

The resolution promotes women's participation in all phases of disaster risk reduction, response and recovery and also calls for specific attention to be paid to women's needs. It also points out the importance of providing support for employment opportunities for women in the recovery stage as well as building an inclusive society supported by a social bond among people.

The resolution was submitted by Japan and adopted by the consensus of member states on the final day of the 56th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), a functional commission of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
