Ukraine: Statement to the United Nations 66th General Assembly thematic debate on disaster risk reduction

A statement by the United Nations General Assembly's permanent representative of Ukraine, stating that the international community must redouble its efforts and work in close cooperation to reduce the vulnerabilities and to be prepared to resolve the consequences of natural disasters. Issues addressed: (i) preparedness, resilience building, and disaster reduction strategies can mitigate the effects of natural disasters in the short- and medium-term; (ii) linking short-term humanitarian aid to long-term development activities remains crucial to recovery; and (iii) the increase of technological catastrophes in the modern world due to natural disasters being interlinked with technogenic nature, including nuclear disasters.

The statement emphasizes Ukraine's participation in the Seoul Nuclear Security Summit, where Ukraine stressed the importance of establishing an international scientific and practical center for the research of the environmental risks of nuclear energy.
