Japan: Statement to the United Nations 66th General Assembly thematic debate on disaster risk reduction

A statement by the Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, sharing experience and lessons learned from the Great East Japan Earthquake in return for the support received from all over the world. Lessons address: (i) the whole society's effort to implement preventive measures to minimize damage and casualties through building codes and early warning systems; (ii) the need to consider mainstreaming disaster disk reduction in international cooperation; (iii) human security; (iv) the inclusion of disaster risk reduction in the post-2015 international development agenda; (v) raising awareness of climate change which aggravates water-related disasters and droughts; and (vi) the forthcoming High-Level International Conference on Large-Scale Natural Disaster in July 2012, as well as the third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in 2015, hosted by Japan. The statement also mentions the sponsoring of the Gender-Equality and the Empowerment of Women in Natural Disasters resolution at the Commission on the Status of Women.
