Philippines: Integrating lessons on disaster risk reduction in schools

Tuguegarao City, Philippines - To ensure safety of all students, teachers and staff, the Department of Education (DepED) Region 2 has enhanced their disaster risk reduction management plan in the school communities.

Dr. Virgilio Isidro, Disaster Action Officer of DepEd 2 said they planned to reduce risks of disaster in school communities through effective programs and projects that contribute to the achievement of quality education.

He said they will conduct an echo-seminar workshop to all division offices on the implementation of the disaster risk reduction management program to be re-echoed to district offices up to the school institutions.

"This is to update our school officials and students on the disaster management plan and risk reduction," Isidro said.

The workshop also aims to inform the school officials on the integration of disaster risk reduction management concepts in the basic education curriculum.

"We will integrate lessons on disaster risk management and activity in different subjects to instill awareness and knowledge to our students on this concern," Isidro said.

Aside from this, the DepEd officials with the help of parents will continue to rehabilitate buildings and facilities that are already deteriorating and considered disaster risks. (Ver/PIA-Cagayan)
