Aside from the debate about whether climate change is causing an increase in 'natural' disasters or not, Anna M Clark, the president of EarthPeople, raises in her article for Al Jazeera the question of the economic threat, particularly to coastal communities, posed by the underestimation of climate change. According to a new report released by the insurance market specialist Lloyd's, "Without adaptation to the new climatic reality, insurance losses from coastal flooding for high-risk properties could double by 2030." Citing New York City Council's recent legislation to make climate change mitigation and adaptation central to its city's planning as an example, Clark concludes that "much more leadership, creative thinking, and cooperation must flow, and quickly. To disregard the research is to invite disaster."
