USA: Drenched New Orleans passes big post-Katrina test

"The city's flood defenses, strengthened since 2005 with a $14.5 billion system of walls, floodgates, levees and pumps, had done their job in the face of the torrential rain," told New Orleans Mayor Mitchell Landrieu to Reuters. The elaborate defense system was built after Hurricane Katrina devastated the area seven years ago. However, the heavy rains and flooding that was brought by Hurricane Isaac taxed the sewage system of the city, and several hundreds of people had to be evacuated.
