Press Release: 4th International Disasterand Risk Conference IDRC Davos 2012
«Integrative Risk Management in a Changing World - Pathways to a Resilient
Society»
26 - 30 August 2012, Davos, Switzerland
Around 1000 global leading risk and disaster experts from more than 100 countries are gathering at the fourth International Disaster and Risk Conference IDRC Davos 2012 in Davos to discuss solutions to the world’s increasing challenge to prevent and manage risks and disasters. Our world is changing and becoming increasingly complex and also more vulnerable. Disaster risks entail ever more international and global impacts and unforeseen cascading effects. A recent example is the drought in the U.S. farm beltthat may triggers another global food price crisis and further limits the access to food for the over 1 billion people suffering from hunger every day.In
2011 the strongest earthquake ever measured in Japan spawn a tsunami that caused over 15’000 casualties and very severe damagesof several nuclear plants that led to a radioactive contamination of over hundreds of square kilometres. The 2011 flood in Thailand hampered the global supply chain for hard disks. The outbreak of the highly pathogenic avian influenzahas stated an example that only an internationally coordinated approach will pay off.
How such complex and multifaceted risks can be reduced and how society can adequately prepare, respond and recover from such events will be discussed during the fourth International Disaster and Risk Conference IDRC Davos 2012 from August 26 to August 30 2012 in Davos. Around 1000 global leading risk and disaster experts from more than 100 countries will debate on the numerous risks from natural hazards and climate change. A special focus at this year's conference will be put on risks
in agriculture, risks in the cities and risks in the health sector.
The interactive and participatory nature of the conference allows the participants to share and discuss state-of-the-art research from multiple disciplines, the latest technological innovations, as well as valuable field experience, to discover synergies and to search for new solutions. The IDRC Davos 2012 is organized by the Global Risk Forum GRF Davos, Switzerland.
