Mexico: Yearly floods the new reality for rural women

Women in rural areas of in South East Mexico have to adapt to floods each year, reports Inter Press Service. They build their houses on stilts or they have to move to higher ground. Following the devastating 2007 floods, the regional goverment created the Reconstruction and Reactivation Programme to Transform Tabasco, which will include providing housing in higher grounds for the women who lost their homes due to floods.

A study published by the Berlin-based Heinrich Böll Foundation found that "Given that gender equality and women's empowerment are central elements for reducing vulnerabilities to climate change, it is important that these policies - through clear, productive actions - diminish these vulnerabilities and advance toward greater gender equality."
