Climate change: Children in danger

“Relocation of population into ‘safer islands’ will result in intense overcrowding and for children this will result in anxiety, loss of culture and identity and these are just some of the impacts that children will face,” said Mereia Carling, specialist of the Foundation of the Peoples of the South Pacific’s Social Policy when presenting the report Climate Change Impacts on Children in the Pacific: Kiribati and Vanuatu written by the United Nations Children’s Fund. As Fiji Times reports, she added other impacts of climate change on children's life such as limited access to safe drinking water, food security, and increased natural disasters. Mrs Carling also stated that children need to be involved in planning policies. Finally, the article quotes two shocking data from the report: “Already 350,000 climate deaths are estimated each year today.” “Almost 80 per cent of all climate deaths are registered among children living in Africa and Asia.”
