Sahel priority region in World Bank talks, says Georgieva

The EU's humanitarian aid commissioner Kristalina Georgieva brought Northern Africa's Sahel region to the attention of the World Bank spring meetings in Washington DC. "We are operating in a security environment that has worsened," Georgieva told Europolitics, pertaining to the deteriorated situation in Libya, Mali, Niger and Nigeria, where 12 million people risk starvation as a result of drought and conflicts in the region. The World Bank meetings focus on bolstering countries' resilience to natural disasters, creating more safety nets for fragile states and ensuring food security.
