Launch of Nepal Climate Change Knowledge Management Center

Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal opened the Nepal Climate Change Knowledge Management Centre (NCCKMC) at the Nepal Academy of Science and Technology on Nov 29, 2010 marking the Center as an important base to advance climate studies and to bring awareness of climate’s impending impacts to livelihoods and ecosystem as a whole. He expressed his happiness for the initiation of the Center as an initiative under the NAPA Project and thanked all the supporting organizations, DANIDA, UK DFID, GEF and UNDP Nepal. Present during the inauguration were State Minister for Science and Technology Mr Indra Prasad Dhungel, Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr Surendra Kafle, Academicians and Government Officials of Nepal.

In partnership with the Ministry of Environment, NAST set up the NCCKMC at its premises in Khumaltar, Lalitpur last October. Dr Dinesh Raj Bhuju, Faculty Chief and Team Leader of NCCKMC said that the Center has already a collection of over 700 titles including books, booklets, reports and pamphlets. “However, these are too scanty, we need more to facilitate researchers and public in general for their understanding about the challenging features of climate change, in particular the global warming,” Dr Bhuju added. He said that the Center is organizing a nationwide mobile library from east Nepal to the west covering over 20 districts. The campaign will include interactive activities such as on-the-spot climate quiz, lectures and exhibition.

With a mission to serve as a dedicated institutional arrangement for managing climate change knowledge in Nepal, the NCCKMC is envisioned as a strong and effective knowledge management center ensuring the production and dissemination of climate change knowledge information in the country, strengthening the capacity of various stakeholders by providing them with the required information to respond to challenges posed by climate change. It aims at enhancing public access to climate change and related information in order to build their capacities to address the challenges posed by climate change and facilitating interface between scientific research and policymaking, decision making processes and development planning.
