Farmer Initiatives for Ecological Livelihood and Democracy Foundation (FIELD-Indonesia)

Mission

FIELD Indonesia Foundation is a Non Government Organization that focus to the development of ecological agriculture; sustainable use and conservation of agrobiodiversity and natural resources; and strengthening rural community and farmer organizations.

The main approaches are Field School, Farmer-to-farmer training and Farmer Action Research. These activities have been conducted since 1990 where the FIELD team members provided technical assistance service to the National Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Program that conducted by Government, NGOs, farmer organizations and community groups.

Supported by USAID, now FIED INDONESIA run a project named Building Disaster and Climate Change Resilience in Padang Pariaman Farming Communities, West Sumatra, Indonesia. The overall goal will be to generate and support resilience at the community level. In this context Resilience is defined as community capability to adapt and evolve in the face of change. Building from below, groups, neighborhoods and villages will be linked to build a replicable district level model of climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction as a response to the problem of currently weak or missing community capabilities.

Specific activities and techical interventions directly linked to livelihoods and the reduction of disaster risks and climate change vulnerability will be undertaken. Technical interventions envisioned as entry points will include Eco-Rice, Agroforestry such as improved bamboo and cacao cultivation and utilization, and small animal husbandry for methane and organic fertilizer production. All these activities will be set in motion via the Farmer Field School approach. These technical initiatives (as well as many others) have been piloted, tested, and developed successfully by FIELD in a number of regions with solid results in terms of sustainable natural resource and environmental management. Simultaneously, local livelihoods are improved through the creation of new, environmentally sound, economic activities.
