The International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) is the international organization dedicated to advancing, promoting, and communicating knowledge of the Earth system, its space environment, and the dynamical processes causing change. Through its constituent Associations, Commissions, and services, IUGG convenes international assemblies and workshops, undertakes research, assembles observations, gains insights, coordinates activities, liaises with other scientific bodies, plays an advocacy role, contributes to education, and works to expand capabilities and participation worldwide. IUGG encourages the application of this knowledge to societal needs, such as mineral resources, mitigation of natural hazards and disasters, and environmental preservation.
The IUGG Union Commission on Geophysical Risk and Sustainability is dedicated to promoting scientific studies applied to the reduction of risk from natural hazards in an increasingly urbanized world and sustainability and to reducing death and destruction from natural and technological hazards by providing hazards data and information to emergency managers, policy-makers, scientists and the general public in the most timely and effective manner as possible.
IUGG holds scientific meetings dedicated to natural hazards and disaster risk reduction and mitigation.
IUGG currently is involved in the ICSU Project "Extreme Natural Hazards and Societal Implications - ENHANS" (http://www.enhans.org).
Member of the International Council for Science (ICSU) since 1919.
IUGG GeoRsik Commission together with commission of the IUGG Associations work on the scientific methodologies for risk assessment and early warning systems.
Via scientific meetings IUGG disseminate the information on natural hazards and disasters risks and promotes science education in this area.
