Disaster risk must be part of new development goals - global forum

Work on reducing the risk of disasters cannot be separated from efforts to tackle climate change and to move towards more sustainable development, an international conference on disaster risk reduction agreed this week, reports Megan Rowling for AlertNet. Earlier this week, UN deputy secretary-general Jan Eliasson told journalists, 'I would claim that disaster risk reduction has to be part of the (post-2015) development agenda because it is the poor, it is the most vulnerable who are most affected.'...
With disaster risk increasing globally due to increasing vulnerability to natural hazards, it has become obvious that the MDGs will require a risk-sensitive approach to ensure their accelerated achievement and sustainability.

The GAR is a biennial global assessment of disaster risk reduction and comprehensive review and analysis of the natural hazards that are affecting humanity. It aims to help focus international attention on the problem and need to address disaster risk and consolidate political and economic support to disaster risk reduction.
Disaster risk reduction is an integral part of sustainable development and therefore an important element for the achievement of the MDGs.
