The original idea behind SEEDS was to examine rapid urbanisation effects on the environment, but its founders decided to use their urban planning skills to mitigate situations where lives were being lost unnecessarily in cyclones and earthquakes. The head of SEEDS recalls his relief work in the aftermath of the deadly 1998 cyclone as a turning point towards saving lives.
