Tsunami records show increased hazards for Chile’s central coast

A new study suggests the historic 1730 earthquake in Chile might have been larger than initially believed. There is a risk of a similar but shallower earthquake, whose moderate shaking might give people a false sense of security, and subsequent tsunami, which would have a devastating effect. This possibility could be used to inform disaster prevention plans.
